The reasons behind fangios respect goes beyond his driving skill, its more a case of his achievements with none of the technology of today. The cars were basic to the extreme and often a race weekend would have at least one death and many injuries. The cars didnt even have seatbelts and the drivers didnt wear fireproof overalls or a proper helmet. Also there was no car features to protect the drivers in an accident,no roll cages,no extingushers,no protected fuel cell or no tehered wheelsThe racing was a survival test as much as anything else, the best drivers lived to race again and to suceed.
