CRP Technology Provides Motorsports Camshaft Cover for Ilmor 4 Stroke MotoGP Engine

“A camshaft cover is the structural part that supports the bearing of the camshaft (camshafts seats, the camshaft usually runs at more or less 9000 rpm), directly applied on the 4 stroke 800cc engine head. The average working temperature is 130 to 140 °C. Every material has a recommended temperature limit. Mechanical properties decrease when the working temperature increases. The recommended limit for Windform XT is 130/140 °C but in some cases 150 to 160 °C also can be reached. The limiting factor comes from the thermoplastic base that melts around 180 °C. At a track like Bahrain or Dubai, even if the ambient temperature is significantly higher than the average at other circuits, the working parameters of the engine (i.e. water and oil temperature) must remain under the limits imposed by the manufacturer.”

Structural Parts Made by Laser Sintering

“Besides the numerous non-structural parts made by Windform XT that can be found in the Ilmor engine, the 2007 innovation project is a real turning point in the creation of racing engines. If the project is successful, the future of the engine and frame production will have the green light toward really new and interesting delivery times, costs and performances.

New ULTRARapid Casting: the TRUE RAPID MANUFACTURING Technology

“CRP (Modena, Italy) is a pioneer in hi-tech casting and thanks to their CRP R&D Department, it’s possible to deliver a full dense and free-shape casting within two WEEKS. The quality of the parts is incredibly close to a CNC machined part, but with the ISOTROPY BY COMPENSATION typical of casting structure. The advantages that this process has over other direct metal sintering technology available today include:
-    Less dimensional limits (less volume limits)
-    No quality limits or problems (N0 deformations, porosity, holes…)
-    No shape limits, no supports, complete geometrical freedom, like only in selective laser sintering of PA powders
-    Much lower cost

CRP Pioneers Titanium Rapid Casting methods to meet motorsports needs

“Rapid Casting combines rapid prototyping, which is used to manufacture a disposable pattern, and investment casting technology. The pattern is made using SLS (selective laser sintering) prototyping systems. The pattern then undergoes wax infiltrations via immersion and capillarity to increase its strength. It’s then immersed in a ceramic bath. The lost pattern is removed via dewaxing with flash firing or in an autoclave. The ceramic shell is subsequently sintered, and the alloy is cast with inductor or voltaic arc.”
